Develop your skills

Both Nottingham Advanced Motorcyclists and Lincolnshire Advanced Motorcyclists offer rider training leading to the IAM advanced bike test.  This is really good value (seriously good value - the time they spend would cost you four figures of folding stuff).  The training is of a high standard and quite exacting.  Visit either of these websites for more information.

Don't be put off by the fact that they mostly have sportsbikes - they really don't mind Harleys.

This training is very highly recommended.  It may transform your riding.

Skills for Life - Making you safer

Advanced motorcycling is not about slowing you down.  It's about helping you to make better progress on the road by becoming more observant, better able to predict and interpret hazards, more adept at observing other road users and road signs and making your riding smoother, more controlled, less stressful and ultimately safer.

What does the Skills for Life programme include?

  • A copy of the IAM Manual "How to be a better rider"
  • Your initial assessment
  • Test preparation
  • The fee for your Advanced Test
  • IAM Associate member status with an automatic upgrade to IAM membership on passing the test within one year

Enrolling on the Skills for Life Programme

Contact your nearest IAM motorcycling group.  See links above for Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire branches.

You must hold a full UK or EU licence and your bike must be capable of maintaining the 70 mph speed limit (no problem there then).

What can you expect on the day of the test?

Once you have had the preparation for the test and are regarded as "test ready" you will ride for about 90 minutes on all types of road accompanied by an IAM appointed examiner.  If you reach the required standard, you'll receive a pass certificate and become an advanced motorcyclist.
