LINDUM COLONIA UK CHAPTER Road Crew |

Road CrewWhat do they do? The Road Crew are the life blood of our riding programme. We rely upon them to devise and reconnoitre our rideouts, checking that they are safe, that they have the necessary facilities – boring things like parking, loos, eateries etc - to sustain us for the day’s ride, and to publicise those details well in advance on the Rideouts section of our Forum. We also rely upon them to guide and supervise the ride when we make it, ensuring that we don’t get lost, that we don’t lose riders, that the ride isn’t irretrievably split, and that if someone strikes trouble there is always support from a member of the Crew. So you can see that being a member of the Crew is about offering a service to other Chapter members for the greater enjoyment and safety of all. Can I join or must I be invited?Generally speaking, Chapters invite people to become members of the crew through the Head Road Captain, having observed them informally over a number of rideouts. But there is absolutely no reason why you cannot ask the Director and/or Head Road Captain to consider you for inclusion in the Crew if you think you can meet the requirements set out below. The requirements1. You must be a fully paid up member of both the Harley Owners Group, and Lindum Colonia UK Chapter (7828) 2. You should enjoy playing an active part in all the Chapter’s activities and meetings, and a regular rideout member. 3. You must be seen to employ a thoughtful and safe riding style, mindful of your fellow Chapter members and other road users. 4. If you aspire to be a Road Captain, you should consider undertaking, and passing, an advanced riding course e.g. Institute of Advanced Motorists, RoSPA, a Road Captains’ Course, either locally provided or through the Harley Owners Group, and the locally provided L.I.V.E.S. First Aid Course. 5. If you do not wish to become a Road Captain, but want to serve the Chapter as a Road Marshal, then these courses are still strongly recommended but are not obligatory with the exception of the First Aid Course which is offered annually through the Chapter. You should seriously consider taking the one day Lincolnshire BikeSafe Course to get a “third party” expert view of your riding style. Road Captain or Road Marshal? All new recruits to the Crew start as Road Marshals, and should they wish to do so, progress to being inducted as Road Captains after a period of time determined by Head Road Captain/Director, during which they may take the relevant training courses, and fulfil Road Crew duties on rideouts as Sweeper, Tail End Charlie or as Ride Leader under the watchful tutorship of the existing Road Crew. Members who are content to remain Road Marshals without progressing to Road Captain status may do so subject to meeting the requirements noted above and below. Staying a member of the Road Crew.Road Captains and Marshals earn the respect and thanks of Chapter members through giving their time and expertise for the benefit of all. To maintain that respect, the Chapter expects Road Captains to: devise, plan, implement and lead at least one new rideout per year, and document it on the Forum, well in advance of the planned date. They should also make themselves available to mentor new members of the crew, and be prepared to undertake Tail End Charlie and Sweeper duties as required. By the same token, to earn that respect, the Chapter expects Road Marshals to: make themselves available to undertake Tail End Charlie and/or Sweeper duties as requested by the Head Road Captain, and - for Road Captain candidates - at his request devise, plan, implement and lead at least one new rideout, and document it on the Forum well in advance of the planned date. Clearly, special family circumstances – illness etc. - may prevent members of the Crew from meeting these expectations. In such unfortunate circumstances, the Director and Head Road Captain should be informed. Crew members who no longer wish to undertake Road Crew roles should offer their resignation to the Chapter Director.
